The young Elisabeth Moss made her debut on the small screen in 1990 at the age of 8, with the Lucky / Chances miniseries , while in 1994 she received her first significant role in the cinema with the interpretation of Greta Weiler, the sister of the protagonist, in the drama Imaginary crimes, directed by Anthony Drazan . Between 1992 and 1995 she appeared instead in seven episodes of the television series The Brock family, getting into the role of Cynthia Parks and working with many famous guest stars.
In 1995 she is in the cast of two prominent thrillers: Separate lives, directed by David Madden, and An almost perfect dinner, with a newly 20-year-old Cameron Diaz. But it is 1999 the turning point of Moss, which sees her engaged in films and TV series that will allow her to get noticed by the general public.
After joining the drama series West Wing – All the President’s Men with the role of Zoey (the youngest of the three daughters of President Bartlet), who will commit her until 2006; she will play the part of Polly, a burn victim, in the critically acclaimed drama Girl interrupted, starring alongside Winona Ryder and Oscar winner Angelina Jolie .
The following years saw her engaged in minor roles for the small and big screen, such as the action thriller The Missing (2003) directed by Ron Howard, and the drama film Virgin (2003), thanks to which she received the nomination as Best female lead at the Independent Spirit Awards in 2004.
Then in 2007, there is yet another TV series that brings her back to the top of the wave. Moss plays the leading role by playing in the role of secretary Peggy Olson in Mad Man, the American series considered a real global phenomenon that has collected prizes, a huge success by the public and which, also, earned her six an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe nomination.
In 2009, it’s Sarah Jessica Parker’s assistant in the movie What happened to the Morgan? by Marc Lawrence, while the following year, she is Jonah Hill’s girlfriend in the comedy Traveling with a rock star, signed by Nicholas Stoller. In 2012 she appeared in the film adaptation of the homonymous autobiographical novel On the road, produced by Francis Ford Coppola and,
a few months later, was cast in the film by Lawrence Kasdan Darling Companion – A dear companion. The following year she was chosen for a new TV series: Top of the Lake(2013), crime series focused on the mysterious disappearance of a twelve-year-old pregnant girl and, thanks to whose interpretation, Elisabeth manages to win the much-coveted Golden Globes for Best Actress.
She returns to the cinema in 2015 playing Helen Wilder in the Ben Wheatley science-fiction film High rise and, in the same year, she is with Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett in Truth – The price of truth, a biopic that analyzes the relations between politics and journalism at the time of George W. Bush. Between 2016 and 2017 significant roles are cut in two box office hits: The Bleeder , the film in which she plays the wife of Chuck Wepner, the boxer who resisted 15 rounds against the legendary Muhammad Ali, and The Square , the direct film by Ruben Östlund , winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival 2017.
Also in 2017, Moss takes part in the umpteenth series: The Handmaid’s Tale, a science fiction TV series that sees her playing June Osborne Difred, the maid assigned to the house of Commander Fred Waterford, and who is worth two Emmy Awards. In 2018, the actress returns to the movies with the drama The Seagull by Michael Mayer and subsequently with Old Man & the Gun, the film David Lowery in which is once again acting next to Robert Redford. In 2019, instead, in the cast of Noi, the disturbing horror thriller starring Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’ o.
More About Elisabeth Moss :
Elisabeth Moss is the actress behind Peggy Olson, one of the most interesting characters in “Mad Men.” Far from encasillela, this paper has allowed him to take her career to the next level and get the Golden Globe with the miniseries “Top of the Lake”.
Elisabeth Moss participated in the seven seasons of the Aaron Sorkin series, in which she played Patricia Barlet, the third and youngest daughter of President Josiah Barlet. The experience gained and the talent demonstrated in this series allowed her to get one of the most important roles of Mad Men: she would be the secretary Peggy Olson,
a woman who manages to ascend within her company, which makes its way into a world of men. The actress managed to create a character with an innocent and weak appearance, but strong and ambitious in the background. Despite not having a striking physique or being one of the prettiest women in the series, she became the most interesting, a kind of contemporary heroine.
Embedding in this role, so striking, was a risk that Elisabeth was responsible for dissipating: her performance in Top of the Lake, the miniseries created by the Australian Jane Campion, showed that her talent was not temporary and that that girl who gave herself to meeting with Picket Fences had become a great actress. Not surprisingly, her role in this small-screen thriller earned him her first big award: a Golden Globe.
Although she has worked on several films and with renowned filmmakers such as Ron Howard or James Mangold, Elisabeth Moss is a television actress, at least for now. Her two great works, Mad Men and Top of the Lake, have shown us an actress who despite not having a striking physique knows how to captivate the audience thanks to the strength and determination that prints her characters.
